Filmed in a working care home and hospital, ‘Fire Safety for Hospitals and Care Homes Part 1’ covers: fire risk assessments (introduction), fire prevention, compartmentation, evacuation and fire action.

Accepted by the National Care Standards (when used properly). We suggest alternating parts 1 and 2 every 6 months to keep the training fresh for the staff.

Every year there are around 800 fires in care homes in the UK. On average three people die each year as a result, and a further 84 are injured. Apart from the human tragedy, there are significant losses in respect of property. Major fires often result in businesses closing for good as they can never recover.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO) came into force in October 2006 and has wide-ranging implications for care home owners and managers, many of whom are still I unaware of the legislation or their new obligations. All care homes are now obliged by law to have carried out a risk assessment, have an emergency plan in place in case of fire and train their staff how to deal with a fire situation. Failure to comply could result in prosecution, with the possibility of unlimited fines or up to two years in prison.
